The year round great weather in Florida makes it the perfect place for all kinds of sports. For many years the Miami Dolphins were the only professional sports team in the Florida but that has changed.

Football in Florida

Football is big in Florida and the state has three NFL teams - the Miami Dolphins, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. But in Florida College Football is as big (if not bigger) than pro football.

The University of Florida Gators , Florida State (FSU) Seminoles, and Miami Hurricanes have all won national championships. And recently both UCF in Orlando and USF in Tampa have improved their football teams dramatically.  Football is the king of sports in Florida.

Basketball in Florida

Florida has two NBA teams the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic. The Heat won the NBA Championship in 2006 and the Magic have a very strong team in 2009. College basketball in Florida is lead by the Florida Gators who have won the National Championship twice in recent years - 2006 and 2007.

Car Racing in Florida

The Daytona 500 and Daytona Speedway in Daytona Beach are the center of NASCAR racing. And now Florida has a second venue for NASCAR with the Homestead Miami Speedway.

Tampa Bay Downs

Tampa Bay Downs is the only thoroughbred race track on the west coast of Florida and has become a major stop on the road to the triple crown.

There are two tracks at Tampa Bay Downs - the main track is a one mile sand oval that is 75 feet wide and the stretch is 976 feet. There is also a turf course that is 7/8 of a mile and is 80 feet wide.

The Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are the only team in NFL history to have a perfect season (17 and 0 in 1972) and have won two Super Bowls (1972 and 1973). The Dolphins have an enormous fan base both in Florida and around the world.

For FSU fans the beginning of Football Season is a big deal. Many Seminole fans plan a trip for at least one Football Game every year. This year the Seminoles have 7 home games.

Football is the king of all sports in Florida and FSU Football has been a dominant force for 25 years.  Currently in the ACC, The FSU Seminoles won the National Championship in 1993 and 1999.

The Gator Football team is one of the most dominant teams in College football. The Gators won the National Championship in 1996, 2006, and 2008.

The Orlando Magic were created in 1989 as part of an expansion of the NBA. The Magic are in the Eastern Conference of the NBA and play in the Orlando Arena in the center of downtown Orlando Florida.
