Go back 150 years in time on February 17 - 19, 2017, to experience a reenactment of the largest and bloodiest battle of the Civil War at the Battle of Olustee.
Activities scheduled daily from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm include Color Ceremonies, Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Medical Demonstrations. Demonstration and Reenactment Battles scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Music, crafts, food, and more.

History of the Battle of Olustee

The Union troops commanded by General Truman A. Seymour left South Carolina with an objective to occupy Jacksonville Florida, their 4th occupation.  Their goals were to disrupt transportation links and deprive the Confederacy of food supplies from central Florida, gain black recruits for the Union army, and help Unionists in east Florida organize a loyal state government.

The Union troops landed in Jacksonville on February 7, 1864.  During the month of January, the Confederate forces were preparing for an offensive. They positioned themselves at Olustee near a lake called Ocean Pond to narrow the passage of the Union troops.

On February 20, 1864 the Union force of 5,500 men and 16 cannon marched westward from Macclenny until they met up with the Confederate troops. Battle casualties amounted to 1,861 Union and 946 Confederate soldiers. In proportion to the number of troops involved, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

The Ravine Gardens invites everyone to enjoy the gardens illuminated in holiday colors while enjoying music of the season!

A ravine was created over thousands of years by water flowing from the sandy ridges on the shore of the St. Johns River. In 1933, this ravine was transformed into a dramatic garden by the federal Works Progress Administration. Much of the original landscaping still exists as formal gardens and an extensive trail system. A 1.8-mile paved road winds around the ravine, offering motorists and bicyclists a view of the gardens. The Ravine Loop is closed to vehicle traffic one hour before sunset, but remains open for pedestrians, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The garden’s peak flowering period is azalea season, late January to April.

Directions: Ravine Gardens State Park is located in Palatka, Florida. From US17/SR100, turn south onto Moseley Avenue, then turn east onto Twigg Street.  Ravine Gardens State Park is located in Putnam County FL.
