The invasive lionfish have been growing in large numbers in the Florida Keys.  This non-native lionfish are eating native fish and crustaceans in large quantities harming the coral reef and ecosystems in the Keys.  The Lionfish Derby series takes place in 3 locations on different dates.

Islmorada Sailfish Tournament

The Islamorada Sailfish Tournament is the first in three sailfish events in the Florida Keys


The three tournaments in the Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship series are:

  • Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament from January 16 -17, 2015
  • Islamorada Fishing Clubs’ Sailfish Tournament on January 22, 2015

Anglers from all over the world compete for cash prizes and the coveted Gold Cup Trophy during this 3 fishing tournament series.  It the premier event sailfish tournament in the Florida Keys.

Early registration is important as The Gold Cup Sailfish Championship is limited to 30 teams of fishermen. Anglers compete individually for the championship ring and as a team for cash prizes of up to $30,000 and the Gold Cup Trophy.  Proceeds from the tournament are supporting the Islamorada Charter Boat Association.

The 33rd Annual Yankeetown Arts and Crafts and Seafood Festival takes place along Riverside Drive in the coastal village of Yankeetown, Florida. Over 100 vendors,  fine art, crafts, games, seafood and live entertainment will provide the entire family with a weekend of fun.

The 35th Annual Horrible Hundred, presented by Florida Freewheelers Inc., offers course option lengths of 35, 70, and 100 miles.  Rest stops every 20 miles will provide water, sports drinks, fruit, and snacks. There will be pre- and post- ride meals provided. 

A 2-day expo will be located at Clermont’s Waterfront Park featuring national cyclist vendors, live music, and great food.  The Waterfront Park is located along Lake Minneola, nestled between East Avenue and Eighth Street.  The park has restroom facilities, picnic areas, beach front swim area and fishing piers.

Ice Sculptures at ICE Orlando

The breathtaking ice sculptures are brought to life by a team of 40 artisans from Harbin, China, (a place known for it’s annual International Ice and Snow Festival), who spend over a month in Kissimmee creating the ice sculptures. The exhibit has spectacular fluorescent and fiber optic lights within the ice sculptures. The attraction is kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit so guests are provided with hooded winter coats to keep warm. 

The theme this season is The Nutcracker!  Another guest favorite is the ICE castle and slides which are designed to celebrate Santa’s Christmas Eve flight with reindeer.  Gaylord Palms Resort is located in Osceola County Florida.  Room night and package deals are available.

This National Training Center event takes place on paved roads and some trails in Lake Louisa State Park.  Aid stations, water and electrolytes will be available throughout the course.  Awards for the top 3 overall winners an winners in each ages group, medals given to Half Marathon and 10K finishers. The NTC is offering a 16 week training program for those interested.

    The average November weather in Panama City Florida is a high 72 and low 48.  Humidity is about 45% with winds from the northeast at about 8 mph.  The water temperature average ranges from 68 to 72 degrees.

    Ironman Florida Course

    The Ironman Florida starts off with a 2.4 mile swim on the beach behind the Boardwalk Beach Resort, in the Gulf of Mexico. The course is a 2.4 mile two-loop swim.  The water temperature is typically between 68 to 72 degrees this time of the year. The beach is open for spectators to watch the swim event.

    Second, participants in the Ironman take a 112 mile bike ride. The bike portion of this event is flat and fast with possible winds being a factor., although wiind can play a factor in the race. The ride begins and ends at the Boardwalk Beach Resort. The bike course is one loop making it difficult for spectators to view the Ironman due to traffic regulations. The best place to connect with athletes is in the bike transition area.

    Last is the 26.2 mile marathon run which is a 2 loop course with a turnaround at St. Andrews State Park. The run course has mile markers and aid stations about every mile. Traffic cones will be used to separate the runners from the traffic where necessary. The run course travels through Panama City Beach and spectators can line the streets to watch athletes run to the finish.

    Halifax Art Festival

    Jewelry, textiles, ceramics, wood, metal, glass, and photography will be on display at the Halifax Art Festival in Daytona Beach


    Halifax Art Festival, the 2nd oldest festival in Florida draws a crowd of over 45,000 visitors each year.  Come to Riverfront Park to view the works of over 200 juried local and national fine artists.     On Sunday, cyclists bike to the Knights Key area with a Monday layover to enjoy Marathon’s watersports offerings and environmental attractions.  On Tuesday, it’s off to Key West for a couple of days of fun.  On Friday, it’s time to jump back on the bikes to head back towards Key Largo with one stop over in Knights Key before arriving in Key Largo on Saturday.

    Bring the family to the 48th Annual Historic Downtown Sebring Craft Festival.  You’ll enjoy the variety of arts and crafts, and unique gifts.  This year’s festival will include a Children’s Street tent filled with activities, Culinary Street tent filled with food vendors, Chamber of Commerce Street tent featuring local businesses, and highlighted by The Circle of Artists crafters and fine artists who have made this a premier event over the years.

    The Ft Lauderdale Boat Show is spread out over 6 locations with more than 3 million square feet of boats, yachts, super yachts, engines, and boating accessories. Additional show highlights include The Blue Wild Dive Show, IGFA’S School of Sportfishing and Hook the Future’s Kids Fishing Clinics.

    The 5 sites for the boat show are:  Bahia Mar Yachting Club, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, Broward County Convention Center, Sails Marina and Ft Lauderdale Hilton Marina.

    The first leg of this 70.3 mile sanctioned event will be the 1.2 mile swim in the protected ocean water of downtown Miami.  Participants will then transition to the 56-mile bike ride through scenic tree lined communities.  Finally, the 13.1 mile run will lead athletes along the beautiful waterfront and the Port of Miami.





    Attend educational seminars throughout the day and visit vendors as they demonstrate the latest in gardening skills and techniques.  There will be garden tours and door prizes!  Over 35 vendors selling orchids, tropicals, palms, bromeliads, pottery and more!





    The Pumpkin Patch Express tickets include a 90-minute train ride and the selection of a pumpkin from the patch to take home. There will also be Hay Rides, Lincoln Log Building and Crafts. Seating begins 30 minutes prior to departure. First come, first served within your train car.

    Paddle Florida

    Paddle Florida is a 123 mile Kayak trip from Live Oak Florida to Chiefland Florida

    Suwannee River Wilderness Trail Background
    The Suwannee River Wilderness Trail is a series of cabins, river camps and private “hubs” along the Suwannee River that are accessible for paddlers, hikers, bikers, horses, and other groups.

    The Florida Park Service and the Suwannee River Water Management District along with private organizations have created the 171-mile Suwannee River Wilderness Trail.  Paddle Florida uses some of the facilities for the Get Down on the Suwannee River paddle event.  There is nightly entertainment around the campfires each evening.

    Downtown Sarasota Arts and Crafts Festival

    Located along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sarasota Florida is known for its beautiful white sandy beaches and exceptional architecture.  The annual Downtown Sarasota Arts and Crafts show has become a yearly tradition for many residents as well as spring time visitors.

    Original to the Chinese, Dragon Boat Racing is quickly becoming a fast growing water sport. It’s group of paddlers, paddle to the beat of a drummer seated inside the bow and are guided to the finish line by the steersman inside the stern.  Each boat is decorated with dragon decorations that symbolize health and vitality. 

    This event is being held at the South Florida Dragon Boat Festival on October 4, 2014, in conjunction with many other fun activities at the festival.





    The Hydro Harvest Farms in Ruskin grows all of their produce hydroponically.  There are many reasons hydroponic growing is not only good for you and the produce you consume, it also means they use less water and take up less land.  You can visit the farm on Monday through Saturday from 9 to 5 or on Sunday from 11 to 4. 

    The Giant Pumpkin Patch is open every day from October 4 until November.  Come and pick organic pumpkins grown without pesticides. The 9th Annual BOO Fest is October 25, 2014, fun for all ages. This is a unique way to enjoy your fall holiday. 





    More than 9,000 visitors come celebrate the Williston tradition with peanuts galore and a fun festival including the Little Peanut Royal Family.  The crowning of Little Peanut King and Queen and Baby Peanut is one of the highlights.  The Little Peanut King and Queen are between ages 3 to 6 years old.  The Baby Peanut contestants are infants and toddlers up to age 2.

    Over 100,000 visitors will take part in the 37th Annual Pensacola Seafood Festival.  There are more than 180 arts and crafts vendors and is recognized as one of the largest arts and crafts fair in Northwest Florida. A variety of seafood dishes are prepared by carefully selected vendors like grilled conch, oyster croquettes, soft shell crab, and coconut shrimp. There is a children’s play area, cooking demonstrations, and much more.

    Universal Studios Horror Theater

    From September 19 to November 1, 2014, get the scare of your life when you attend Halloween Horror Night at Universal Studios.  A live bone chilling experience can be had as the theme park is transformed into a hair raising, and thrilling “Walking Dead” experience.  Visit haunted houses and watch out for many of the unexpected zombies and freaks that unexpectedly creep out of every corner. This event is not recommended for young children. Age 13 years or older is best.

    The tournament’s kick off is at 4 pm on Thursday, September 18 at the Key Colony Inn located at 700 W. Ocean Dr. in Key Colony Beach.  It’s a fun event with individual and team competitions for the largest bonefish and permit.  A 3 species slam is awarded to the top spin or fly angler who releases the largest bonefish, permit and tarpon.  A wet pants award is given to the angler who wades from shore with the best catch.

    Lobster is the main attraction at the Lobster Festival and Tournament in Panama City, FL


    Lobster tournament divers will compete in a variety of catagories, including Spiny lobster, Shovelnose lobster, and Big 6. Sunday will host a huge smorgasbord of fresh lobster, prepared any way you desire:  Blackened, broiled, chilled, fried, grilled, halved, sauteed, skewered, steamed or whole! The event will be combined with the 15th Annual Schooners Sand Sculpting Contest, so come check it out!

      Florida Sportsman Expo Highlights

      The Florida Sportsman Expo has free ongoing seminars on five stages , kids events, and free lessons at a 100 foot indoor fly-casting pond. One of the biggest attractions is the Rigging it Right Academy for both offshore and inshore fishing.  There are also “learning stations” with supplies on hand including wire, mono, pliers, and fresh bait. The Florida Sportsman magazine team gives hunting tips, personal hands-on instruction on properly rigging baits and lures that work best in the Florida waterways.  Visitors will love the tricked-out swamp buggy and airboat as well as the kayak stage.
