The invasive lionfish have been growing in large numbers in the Florida Keys.  This non-native lionfish are eating native fish and crustaceans in large quantities harming the coral reef and ecosystems in the Keys.  The 2016 Summer Lionfish Derby series takes place in 4 locations on different dates.

Suwannee River Wilderness Trail Background
The Suwannee River Wilderness Trail is a series of cabins, river camps and private “hubs” along the Suwannee River that are accessible for paddlers, hikers, bikers, horses, and other groups.

The Florida Park Service and the Suwannee River Water Management District along with private organizations have created the 103-mile Suwannee River Wilderness Trail.  There is nightly entertainment around the campfires each evening.

Florida Sportsman Expo Highlights

The Florida Sportsman Expo has free ongoing seminars on five stages , kids events, and free lessons at a 100 foot indoor fly-casting pond. One of the biggest attractions is the Rigging it Right Academy for both offshore and inshore fishing.  There are also “learning stations” with supplies on hand including wire, mono, pliers, and fresh bait. The Florida Sportsman magazine team gives hunting tips, personal hands-on instruction on properly rigging baits and lures that work best in the Florida waterways.

The Hydro Harvest Farms in Ruskin grows all of their produce hydroponically.  There are many reasons hydroponic growing is not only good for you and the produce you consume, it also means they use less water and take up less land.  You can visit the farm on Monday through Saturday from 9 to 5 or on Sunday from 11 to 4.

More than 9,000 visitors come celebrate the Williston tradition with peanuts galore and a fun festival including the Little Peanut Royal Family.  The crowning of Little Peanut King and Queen and Baby Peanut is one of the highlights.  The Little Peanut King and Queen are between ages 3 to 6 years old.  The Baby Peanut contestants are infants and toddlers up to age 2.

    Lobster is the main attraction at the Lobster Festival and Tournament in Panama City, FL

    Hemingway Days

    Hemingway Days in Key West is held at Sloppy Joes and is a look alike contest, as well as many other activities


    The Pulitzer Prize winning author, Ernest Hemingway, lived in Key West in the 1930’s at 907 Whitehead Street.  His home is now a registered National Historic Landmark and still has his writing studio where he spent hours and hours writing.  His home has the first pool every built in Key West. He also loved the Keys lifestyle by visting Sloppy Joe’s on a regular basis and deep sea fishing with family and friends.

    You’ll see amazing look a-likes to Ernest Hemingway during the festival with stocky white-bearded men resembling him.  There will be readings and book signings by nationally acclaimed authors, a museum exhibit of rare Hemingway memorabilia, a fun and crazy “Running of the Bulls” and a 3-day marlin fishing tournament.





    There will be Recipe Contests, mango-themed games and arts and crafts. Mango Mania tshirts and recipe books will be available for purchase, and a free mango tasting table will be available to all patrons.

    • Florida Keys Underwater Music Festival

      The underwater music festival is all about divers, snorkelers and wacky underwater musical instrument


      Local Keys artist, August Powers, has sculpted numerous aquatic instruments to go along with the music. Past events have featured the Snorkeling Elvises, a longhaired mermaid playing the harp, and an underwater band.  The party begins Friday evening and continues on Saturday, please check website for updates.





      Over 4 days, the fun events center around restaurants, block party, music, bikini contests, Mel trivia, cake contest to win an Atocha coin, raffles, and many more prizes and events around the Conch Republic. Proceeds from this annual charity support Wesley House family services.

      The world famous Blue Angels will perform stunts and maneuvers over the Gulf of Mexico along with Navy flight team, civilian and other military aircraft performances during this weekend airshow event.       Visitors and boat fans get to experience the excitement of Offshore racing as they watch the race boats pass beneath the Seven Mile Bridge at super fast speeds of over one hundred and fifty miles per hour.  Free Admission at the Marathon Airport, come out to see the boats and meet the teams.

      You can view the races from the Gulf Side from Tranquility Bay to Seven Mile Bridge. The finish line is at Faro Blanco Marina @ Hyatt Place, 1996 Overseas Hwy.  Hang around after the race for an opportunity to see the Race Awards Presentation 4pm -  6pm.  A fun time for the whole family.





      Sprint Distance Course
      The event begins with a 1/4 mile swim in the warm Atlantic Ocean, followed by a 11.5 mile scenic bike ride, and ending with a 3 mile trail/road.  Duathlon is also available which is Run, Bike, Run (no swimming.)  The rules are based on USA Triathlon rules.

      International Distance Course
      Begin with a .5 mile ocean swim, next a 23 mile bike ride, and finishing with a 6 mile trail run.

      Duathlon:
      Run 1 mile, followed by a 11.5 mile bike ride and finishing with a 3 mile run.

      Sprint Course:
      Swim - 1/4 mile swim in the Atlantic Ocean (beach start) with a fresh water shower for transition #1. Swim caps are provided in your race packet and must be worn during the swim.

      Bike - 16 miles on flat, fast, out and back course along the coastline of scenic Amelia Island on NE Florida’s beautiful Atlantic coastline.

      Run - 3 miles out and back with water stations at mile marks. The run course is out and back through the North Fletcher island community.

      Olympic Course:
      Swim- 1.5K (0.93 miles) Swim in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

      Bike- 40K (24.7 miles) Flat course with one bridge through scenic Amelia Island.

      Run- 10K (6.2 miles) Out and back shaded course through Fort Cinch.

      This is the only sanctioned US Coast Guard Permitted Race around Key West. Swimmers and relay teams swim 12.5 miles clockwise around the island of Key West beginning and finishing on Higgs Beach (1000 Atlantic Blvd). Awards given to the the overall top- male and female finishers and the top 6 finishers in each age group.  Pre-race check is Friday, June 17 11am-7pm at the Florida Keys Community College pool.





      All proceeds from the tournament go to the Guides Trust Foundation to support professional fishing guides and back country fishery conservation programs. 





      Recognized as one of largest and best antique shows in the USA, the West Palm Beach Antiques Festival has been around over 20 years. Each month, the show features a variety of antiques, collectibles and accessories from dealers all over the country.

For Main Entrance and Festival Parking, proceed one mile north on U.S. 41 and turn left at Florida Folk Festival sign. From I-10 to U.S. 41 North (Exit 301), travel 9 miles to town of White Springs.

      The 8th Annual Battle in the Bay Dragon Boat Festival will be held on May 14, 2016, on Sombrero Beach in Marathon, Florida Keys.  There are twenty paddlers per boat who paddle to the beat of a drummer seated inside the bow and are guided to the finish line by the steersman inside the stern.  A portion of this year’s event proceeds benefits Heron Peacock Supported Living. 





      The 51st Anniversary of the Pompano Beach’s Fishing Rodeo takes place May 11 - 15, 2016.  Fishing is on Friday and Saturday, May 13 -14.. The awards banquet takes place Sunday, May 15. The events take place at Alsdorf Park at the 14th Street Boat Ramps in Pompano Beach. NEW for 2016, Military appreciation night, Thursday, May 12.

      Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo History

      The Fishing Rodeo started in 1965 by the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce to keep winter tourists in South Florida longer than the winter months.  The tournament was named the Fishing Rodeo because it is a “roundup” of the most popular fishing species. In 1978, the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo was incorporated as a non-profit corporation.





      This annual event is a fun, sandy and popular sand sculpting contest on Siesta Key.  All day long you can enjoy watching the sand sculptures being created by artists of all ages.

      Registration begins at 8:30 am, judging at 1pm with winners announcement at 2 pm. There are cash prizes for first, second, and third place for each category.  The categories include adult - humorous, adult - miscellaneous, children - 10 years and younger, and children 11-17 years of age.

      Siesta Key Sand Sculpture Directions:
      Siesta Beach - Take Rt. 41 to Stickney Point, then west over the Stickney Point Bridge.  Turn right just over the bridge onto Midnight Pass Rd and follow it until it becomes Beach Road ending at Siesta Beach.

      From Southbound Florida’s Turnpike: Exit onto Okeechobee Blvd. and head east. Continue about 5 miles to Tamarind Ave. (at railroad tracks). Proceed north (left) on Tamarind Avenue to Banyan Blvd. Turn east (right) on Banyan to downtown. Follow signs to downtown parking.

      From Northbound Florida’s Turnpike: Exit onto Okeechobee Blvd. and follow directions above. Or, exit onto Southern Blvd. and head east. Continue approximately 6 miles to Parker Ave. Proceed north (left) on Parker. Parker will become Tamarind Ave. after crossing Okeechobee Blvd. Continue north on Tamarind to Banyan Blvd. Turn east (right) on Banyan to downtown. Follow signs to downtown parking.





      The 9th Annual Choctawhatchee Estuary Family Festival is fun and educational on topics about the coastal environment, local critters, ground water, and red tides.  It is hosted by the Friends of the Emerald Coast State Parks and the Mattie M. Kelly Cultural and Environmental Institute of Northwest Florida State College.

      To drive to the Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park in Niceville:

      From the West:
      Take Interstate 10 East to Highway 85 South until you reach Highway 20. Go East on Highway 20 and the park is approximately 5 miles on the left.

      From the East:
      Take Interstate 10 West to Highway 331 South until you reach Highway 20. Go West on Highway 20 approximately 25 miles until you see signs for park on right.





      The Annual Pompano Beach Seafood Festival has drawn crowds of over 100,000 people to this major festival with music, art, crafts, children’s activities, and fabulous food.  Local restaurants prepare the fresh catch and offer samplings along the rows of food booths.  Proceeds benefit over 50 charities.

      Directions and Parking
      The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival is located at the East end of Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach.  The main entrance to the festival is on the corner of Atlantic and A1A.  Other entrances are on Pompano Beach Boulevard about 300 feet South of the Pompano Pier and Britney Avenue and Atlantic.

      Parking is available at municipal lots on the beach across from the Pier at NE 2nd Street and on Riverside Drive.  There is paid parking on private lots and other areas on Atlantic Boulevard.  Free trolley service runs from the parking lots at both Wachovia and Washington Mutual Banks.
