Tallahassee Historic Capitol

Experience Florida’s history stepping back 150 plus years to its historic Capitol building and supporting government.  The Inside Florida team recently visited the historic capitol in Tallahassee and took a few pictures.

New and Old Capitol Buildings

Florida’s historic capitol building with its domed ceiling sits directly in front of the 22-story new capitol building which was completed in 1977.

Steps to the Old Capitol
Take a step back in history to 1845 when this brick structure was first built.  Prior to the 1845 Capitol building, the legislature used three log cabins and then a two story building that was 40 feet by 26 feet.  In 1902, two wings were added to the historic Capitol building to house the expanding government.

Governor’s Private Office
Look inside the Florida governor’s private office as it existed nearly 100 years ago.  The governor’s original desk, book case, and table with chairs are in their original condition.

Florida Supreme Court
Go back a hundred years and take a peek inside Florida’s highest court in the state, the Supreme Court.  Started in 1845 when Florid became a state, the supreme court resides in Tallahassee overseeing all courts throughout the state.

Native Americans in Florida
Florida has a long history and extensive influence of Native Americans in our history.  You can see some of this history at the Florida capital.  Chief Billy Bowlegs is an example.  This 1852 photograph was taken when Chief Billy Bowlegs met with the President. Bowlegs later led the Seminole resistance to the U.S. Army in the Third Seminole War (1855-1858.)

Civil War Monument
This monument was raised by women in honor of the heroic patriotism of the men of Leon County who died during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
