From the St Lucie area, you can easily jump on the Florida Turnpike or I-95 and drive 2 hours north to Orlando or 2 hours south to Miami.  Florida Atlantic University and Indian River Community College (IRCC) have a campus in Port St Lucie.  The New York Mets spring training is headquartered in St Lucie. The town also has its own minor league team called the St Lucie Mets.

There are 3 incorporated cities and towns in St Lucie County – City of Fort Pierce, City of Port St Lucie, and the Village of St Lucie. 

Port St. Lucie

Port St Lucie had a huge real estate development boom between 1999 and 2006 and has plenty of homes and apartments for its 90,000 plus residents to choose from.  Home to the New York Mets spring training and the PGA Village, Port St Lucie appeals to both families and retirees.

St Lucie Village

St Lucie Village is a historic area in St Lucie County with 34 historic buildings situated along Indian River Drive.

Fort Pierce

Fort Piece has more than 41,000 residents in its coastal town along the Indian River Lagoon.  Its quaint downtown has shopping, restaurants, and the historic Sunrise Theater that hosts some great live performances. 

A local favorite for a good drink on the water is the Tiki Bar and Restaurant. The Tiki Bar is next to the Fort Pierce Marina where you can check out some great boats or dock your own boat at this open air bar and restaurant.  You’ll enjoy great views on the Indian River, live music and great cocktails.  The menu offers lots of seafood choices (calamari, shrimp, crabcakes, mahi mahi sandwiches) and typical casual food (hamburgers, salads, soups, and french fries.)

St Lucie Communities and Neighborhoods

There are several large communities around St Lucie County including St Lucie West and Tradition.

St Lucie West

St Lucie West is a 4,600 acre planned community with hundreds of lakes, 8 clubhouses, and its own championship golf course.  It is also home to a major league baseball stadium and joint college campus with Indian River Community College and FAU along with plenty of shops and restaurants.

St Lucie County School Registration

To register children for a St Lucie County public school, you can go directly to the school or go to the Student Assignment department of the St Lucie County School Board in Fort Pierce.  To register your child, you’ll need to bring proof of residency, a certificate of immunization, proof of medical examination during the past 12 months, and birth certificate.  If you have a copy of your child’s last report that schools request to see one.

The schools in St Lucie County vary in quality. There are many elementary schools that have received “A” rating for their school.  However, there’s only one high school that has received an “A” rating.

St Lucie Parks and Rec

The parks and recreation department for St Lucie County offers a variety of classes, programs, and special events for its residents and visitors.

Pre-School Programs – for ages 2 to 6, there’s plenty of motor skill development classes, movement and fitness classes for all ages.

Youth Sports and Adult Sports – offered by St Lucie Parks and Rec are baseball, softball, football, tennis, soccer, basketball, karate, cheerleading, and other sports.

Senior Activities – the programs offered are varied with dog obedience, games, aerobics, walking, and many dance classes including country line dancing and ballroom dancing.

Florida with its reputation of great weather year round for golf, doesn’t stop here.  The St Lucie area is home to some awesome public golf courses.

Fishing Spots in St Lucie County

Around St Lucie County you don’t need a boat to do some great fishing. You do need a Florida state issued fishing license which you can apply for online or get at any sporting goods or fishing supply store.

Fort Pirece Fishing Spots
Banty Saunders Bridge Area is 14 acres and has great fishing along the Indian River in Ft Pierce.  Just take the North Causeway off of Federal Highway 1 or A1A. There’s no facilities and limited parking.

Fort Pierce Inlet
The Fort Pierce Inlet has a long walkway that runs out along the inlet. There is plenty of room to fish on the inlet side or the beach side.

Port St Lucie Fishing Spots

Sshh!  It’s a local favorite. Little Jim Bridge on North Hutchinson Island Causeway has a saltwater pier, pavilions, tables, and restrooms.  You’ll find plenty of locals fishing this spot. 

Public Boat Ramps in Fort Pierce
If you’re looking to launch a boat, Fort Pierce in St Lucie County has 6 public boat ramps in Fort Pierce and on Hutchinson Island.

Moore’s Creek Boat Ramp – In Fort Pierce, just before the south bridge go east on Indian River Drive to the Manatee Center to access the 6 boat ramps.  This boat ramp closes from November 15 to March 31 to protect the manatees that hang out in Moore’s Creek during cooler months.

Fish and Hunting Licenses in St Lucie County

Florida law requires that nonresidents get a fishing license for saltwater fishing.  Florida residents are not required to get a fishing license for saltwater fishing from land but do need one for saltwater fishing from a boat.  There are exemptions for fishing licenses if you are under age 16 or over the age of 65.

For freshwater fishing, Florida residents and non-residents must get a fishing license unless your under the age of 16. Licenses are available at the St Lucie County Courthouse, WalMart, KMart, and just about any local bait and tackle shop.

For a hunting license permit in St Lucie County, to hunt bird and game in season, go by the St Lucie Tax Collectors office, Kmart, WalMart, or most local bait and tackle shops can issue a hunting permit.
