Ocean Drive is the main road in South Beach, Miami Beach

Getting to South Beach

To get to South Beach from anywhere in South Florida take 95 to 395 (the MacArthur Causeway) east. The MacArthur Causeway will take you over Biscayne Bay. As you are heading east will pass Jungle Island - an attraction with many Parrots and other animals -  on your left and the Miami Children’s Museum on you right.  Next you will see the Port of Miami on your right where you will probably see many Cruise Ships coming and going.

Next you will see Palm Island and Star Island on your left. These are exclusive neighborhoods with impressive waterfront homes and many boats from small fishing boats to huge yachts.

The MacArthur Causeway turns into 5th street, which runs right into Ocean Drive.  Once you are at Ocean Drive you can go right (south) or left (north) and you are in the heart of South Beach.

The Beach on South Beach

Along Ocean Drive from 5th street to 14th street there are entrances to the beach. You will also find bath rooms every few blocks. There are lifeguards on South Beach from South Point Park to 85th street. In addition to an actual life guard each life guard station displays the current ocean conditions and warnings when conditions are dangerous.

Colored flags from green to red indicate if the current ocean conditions are calm, moderate,  or dangerous. And a red flag with a line through a swimmer indicates that the water is closed to the public. Check with the lifeguards if you are not clear on the current surf conditions.
