The Monroe County School District is an “A” rated district. All of the elementary schools in the Keys are A rated. Monroe County has eight schools earning “A”, four earning “B”, and one earning a “C” grade. The graduation rate has increased to 84% which is a 9% increase.

Charter schools are public schools that operate under a performance contract which frees them from most rules and state statutes of the traditional public schools. They are held accountable as an individual school for their academic performance and are encouraged to use innovative learning methods. All students are eligible to apply that live within the school’s district.

Treasure Village Montessori Charter School
160 students are enrolled in this charter school for Monroe County’s public school system. Beginning at age four children can attend the Treasure Village Montessori School. The school is tuition free and there is a wait list.
Open enrollment is the third week in April but you can apply any time during the school year and be added to the wait list. There is a maximum number of students of 160.

There are five total elementary schools throughout the Keys for grade K-5 in Key West and Marathon. Monroe County also has three schools for K-8 schools in Key Largo, Plantation Key, and Sugarloaf.

There are two middle schools in Monroe County. There are three schools that are K-8 schools in Key Largo, Plantation Key, and Sugarloaf.
Horace O’Bryant Middle School
Grades 6 through 8, Horace has 756 students enrolled. It is a “B” rated school missing the A status by 11 points. Home of the Buccaneers named after the legendary treasure hunters who once sailed along Key West looking for lost treasures.

Marathon Middle School

Monroe County Centers - the public school system in the Keys offers a number of schools for students with specialized needs from pre school ages to age 18.
Even Start Program - serves to intervene in the lives of disadvantaged children and families who are exposed to poverty, neglect, drug abuse or domestic violence beginning with early childhood education.
DJJ - the Monroe Regional Juvenile Detention Center is a department of juvenile justice school with 15 residential beds for students who are detained by the Circuit 16 Courts.
