Lake Jackson Mounds History
A society that developed a site of this type is believed to have had tribal leaders and a well organized political system. The remains of important tribal members have been found at the Lake Jackson Mounds State Park with burial objects including elaborate items such as copper breast plates, shell beaded necklaces, bracelets, anklets and cloaks still in place. These exotic artifacts indicate religious and trading connectionss with other large, prehistoric Indian ceremonial centers in the southeastern United State. It is thought the Lake Jackson Indians traded with the Etowah in Georgia, Moundville in Alabama, Duck River in Tennessee and Spiro in Oklahoma.
From 1825 to 1860, the land was part of a large plantation owned by Col. Robert Butler. He was Florida’s first Surveyor General under Andrew Jackson’s governorship. The remains of this period can be seen along the nature trail.
Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park in Tallahassee is located in Leon County Florida.
