The park provides habitat for many species of wildlife.  Endangered and threatened sea turtles nest in the area including loggerhead, Atlantic green, and leather back turtles during spring and summer times. You’ll find many native birds at Avalon State Park including Roseate Spoonbill, Great Egret, Reddish Egret, Osprey and American Oystercatcher.  The protected plant species you’ll find are Beach Star, Butterfly Orchid, and Prickly Pear Cactus.

Years ago the beach was used to train the Navy Frogmen of WWII.  The Frogmen were an underwater demolition team. Swimmers and snorkelers may come across underwater obstacles left behind by amphibious warfare exercises during World War II.
