Tampa Florida sits on the west coast of Florida on Hillsborough River, and Hillsborough Bay, which flow directly into Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The Tampa Bay area includes Tampa, St Petersburg, Clearwater, and many of the small surrounding towns. The City of Tamp has a population of about 336,000 but the greater Tampa Bay Area has over 4 million people.

Tampa Bay Downs is the only thoroughbred race track on the west coast of Florida and has become a major stop on the road to the triple crown.

There are two tracks at Tampa Bay Downs - the main track is a one mile sand oval that is 75 feet wide and the stretch is 976 feet. There is also a turf course that is 7/8 of a mile and is 80 feet wide.
